Ingredients:

1 recipe for double crust pie dough (enough for 1 9-inch pie)

6-7 cups of thinly sliced Granny Smith apples (about 8-9 large apples)

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Pinch of salt

Ingredients:

-1 unbaked 9 inch pie crust

-2 tablespoons flour

-1 teaspoon salt

-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

-1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

-6 cups thinly sliced granny smith apples

-1 cup sugar

-3 tablespoons lemon juice

-3 tablespoons butter, melted

-1 egg white, beaten until frothy

For the topping:

-1/2 cup sugar

-1/2 cup flour

-1 teaspoon cinnamon

-4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into pieces

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add apples and toss to coat. In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, lemon juice and melted butter. Pour over apple mixture and toss to coat.

Pour mixture into pie crust. Brush edge of crust with beaten egg white. In a small bowl, mix together topping ingredients. Sprinkle over top of pie. Place pie on a baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees and continue baking for 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly.

Preparation

There are a few things you need to do to get your apple pie ready for baking. First, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, peel and slice your apples into thin pieces. You'll need about 6-7 cups of sliced apples.

Once your apples are sliced, mix them with the sugar, flour, spices, and lemon juice. Pour this mixture into your unbaked pie crust. Dot the top of the pie with butter or margarine.

Now it's time to put on the top crust. Roll out your second pie crust and place it over the top of the filling. Crimp or flute the edges of the crusts together. Cut slits in the top crust so that steam can escape while baking.

Brush the top of the pie with milk or beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar, if desired. Bake your pie for about 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Making the Pie Crust

Making the pie crust is one of the most important steps to making a perfect apple pie. There are a few things to keep in mind when making the crust that will ensure it comes out flaky and delicious.

First, always use cold butter. This will help to create a flakier crust. Secondly, be careful not to overwork the dough. Once the dough comes together, stop mixing it and let it rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out.

When you are ready to roll out the dough, be sure to flour your work surface and rolling pin well. This will help to prevent the dough from sticking and make it easier to work with. Roll the dough out into a large circle that is about 1/8-inch thick.

Once you have rolled out the dough, carefully transfer it to your pie plate. Trim off any excess dough around the edges and crimp or decorate the edge of the pie crust as desired. Now your crust is ready to be filled with delicious apples and baked!

Filling the Pie

There are many ways to fill a pie, but this Ultimate Homemade Apple Pie recipe is our favorite. The filling is made with a combination of Granny Smith apples, honeycrisp apples, and Fuji apples. This gives the pie a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. We also add a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg to give the filling an extra bit of flavor.

To make the filling, start by peeling and slicing the apples. Then, in a large bowl, mix together the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the sliced apples to the mixture and toss to coat evenly. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust and spread it out evenly.

Bake the pie at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and continue baking for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The pie is done when the filling is bubbly and the crust is golden brown.

Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will give the filling time to set up so that you get nice clean slices when you cut into it. Serve with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream on top!

Baking the Pie

When it comes to baking the perfect apple pie, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, you want to make sure your dough is nice and flaky. This can be achieved by using cold butter and cutting it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Secondly, you want to use a variety of different apples in your pie for both sweetness and tartness. A mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples is always a good choice. Finally, don't be afraid to spice things up with a little cinnamon or nutmeg.

Now that you know the basics, let's get started on our recipe! Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While that's heating up, roll out your dough on a lightly floured surface. Once it's rolled out, transfer it to a 9-inch pie plate and trim the edges. Next, add your apples to the pie plate, toss them with sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, then dot with butter. Place the top crust on your pie and Crimp the edges together. Cut slits in the top of the crust to allow steam to escape while baking.

Bake your pie for about 50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving so that the filling has time to set up properly. Serve with a scoop of ice cream or some whipped cream and enjoy!

Topping Ideas

There are endless possibilities when it comes to toppings for your apple pie. Here are a few of our favorites:

- Cinnamon sugar: This classic topping is always a winner. Simply sprinkle some cinnamon sugar over the top of your pie before baking.

- Crumble topping: A crumble topping is easy to make and adds a delicious crunch to your pie. Simply mix together some flour, sugar, butter, and spices, then sprinkle over the top of the pie before baking.

- Streusel topping: Streusel is similar to a crumble topping, but with the addition of nuts or oats for extra flavor and texture. Again, simply mix together the ingredients, then sprinkle over the top of your pie before baking.

- Whipped cream: A dollop of whipped cream is the perfect finishing touch for any apple pie. You can either make your own whipped cream or use store-bought. Either way, it'll be delicious!
